THOUGHTFUL DESIGN
A thoughtfully designed home reveals something about the people who live there. Its character comes through in the spaces they gravitate toward, the way they welcome family and friends, and the details that bring pleasure to an ordinary day. At Vellum Design Studio, these personal connections guide my approach to custom home design in Bend, Oregon.
I begin by getting to know how my clients live and what they value. A quiet morning routine, a love of cooking, or the anticipation of having grandchildren visit can offer meaningful direction. Those conversations influence how rooms connect, where privacy matters, and which spaces deserve particular attention. Over time, they become the foundation for a home that feels familiar and distinctly personal.
SITE DRIVEN EMPHASIS
The property is equally influential. Throughout Bend, Tumalo, and Central Oregon, each site offers a different combination of terrain, light, views, and surroundings. I consider the home and its setting together, allowing the land to help guide the design. A change in grade might create an opportunity to settle the home into a hillside. A secluded portion of the property might suggest a courtyard or a more intimate gathering space. A distant mountain view might establish an outlook while nearby trees give a room its sense of enclosure.
These relationships shape the experience of moving through the home. I pay close attention to what becomes visible upon entering, how a hallway opens into a living space, and where a window can frame something worth noticing. The connection between indoors and outdoors develops through these decisions, from the placement of a terrace to the way natural light moves across a room.
ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION
My approach also leaves room for a broad range of architectural expression. A modern home may draw its character from restrained materials and strong horizontal lines, while a more traditional home may find warmth in familiar proportions and layered details. In either case, I look for consistency in scale, materials, and composition so the design feels considered as a whole. The aim is a home with lasting appeal that reflects its owners and feels appropriate to its setting.
My construction background informs that work throughout the process. Alongside the creative possibilities, I consider how the home will be built, how materials come together, and how design decisions translate into construction drawings. Early collaboration with the builder helps connect the developing design to the intended level of investment. Careful detailing carries those ideas forward into the finished home.
